What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high frequency sound waves to produce dynamic visual images of structures inside your body including organs, tissue, or blood flow inside the body.

Ultrasound is a simple, safe, routine procedure that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Diagnostic ultrasound is a non-invasive way to image inside the body with the use of sound waves.

Diagnostic ultrasound can be divided into two types: anatomical and functional ultrasound.

Anatomical ultrasound provides images of internal organs and other structures.

Functional ultrasound combines the anatomical images with information such as the movement and velocity of tissue or blood, softness or hardness of tissue, and other physical characteristics, to give healthcare practitioners additional information to help them visualize changes in function within a structure or organ.

Why are ultrasounds completed?

Ultrasound is used for many reasons, including to:

·         Diagnose gallbladder disease

·         Check the thyroid gland

·         Evaluate blood flow

·         Find genital and prostate problems

·         Evaluate metabolic bone disease

·         Assess joint inflammation

·         Various types of vascular studies (including DVT’s) and echocardiograms.

What to expect during your visit

A registered, diagnostic medical sonographer will position you on the table, apply warm gel on your skin (over the area being imaged), and will then press on the skin with a hand-held transducer to obtain necessary images.
